Breville Barista Express BES870 Review: The Machine That Ends the Cafe Habit

Brad - The Mechanic reviews the tools you use every day.

The Silver Fox Verdict

At a certain point, paying six dollars for a coffee you could make better at home becomes a choice you stop making. The BES870 is where that choice gets made.

The problem with most home espresso machines is the grinder. Either you buy a machine without one and add a separate grinder, which doubles the bench space and the cost, or you buy a machine with a built-in grinder that cannot be adjusted precisely enough to matter.

The Breville Barista Express solves this by integrating a conical burr grinder with 25 grind settings directly into the machine. It is not a compromise. The grinder is capable enough to extract espresso correctly, and the machine is capable enough to use that extraction properly.

The Integrated Grinder

The BES870 uses a 40mm stainless steel conical burr grinder. It grinds directly into the portafilter, which means no static, no transfer mess, and no oxidation between grind and extraction. Dose is adjustable by grind time. The 25-setting grind dial covers the full range from Turkish to coarse filter.

For espresso, you will find your setting within the first week and rarely move it. That is the correct outcome.

Pressure and Temperature

Extraction pressure is 9 bar at the group head - the industry standard. The BES870 achieves this via a pump rated to 15 bar with a regulator that maintains 9 bar at the puck. The pressure gauge on the front is not decorative. It tells you whether your grind and tamp are correct. This is the feedback loop that most home machines do not provide.

Temperature is PID controlled. Pre-infusion wets the puck at low pressure before full extraction begins. This is the step that separates properly extracted espresso from bitter or sour shots. It is standard on machines costing twice as much.

Steam and Milk

The steam wand produces dry steam - low moisture content. This is what allows microfoam. Flat whites, cappuccinos, and lattes are achievable within a week of practice. The learning curve is honest - it takes repetition, not skill. Daily use produces competence within a fortnight.

Bench Footprint

Width 39cm. Height 41cm. Depth 31cm. It requires approximately half a metre of bench depth to operate comfortably including the portafilter swing. If bench space is limited, this is the relevant constraint.

The Professional Choice

BES870 in Brushed Stainless. Easier to clean, shows use honestly, ages well. The black and red colourways are attractive new and require more maintenance to keep that way.

The Value Choice

The BES870 in Brushed Stainless when on promotion through major appliance retailers. Price fluctuates - waiting for a meaningful discount is a reasonable strategy if timeline is flexible.

What It Does Not Replace

A dedicated espresso machine and a dedicated grinder at the same combined price point will produce better espresso. The Breville Barista Pro (BES878) adds a faster heating element and a digital display. If the budget extends, the Pro is worth considering.

Note for UK and European buyers: The BES870 is sold as the Sage Barista Express in the UK and Europe. Same machine, different brand name. Identical specifications and performance.

Comparison

Machine Grinder Included PID Price Range
Breville BES870 Yes (conical burr) Yes High end
De'Longhi La Specialista Yes (burr) Yes Premium
Sage Bambino Plus No Yes Mid range
Delonghi Dedica No No Entry level

Brad's note: The De'Longhi La Specialista is a direct competitor. The grinder is comparable. The price premium is meaningful. For most home users the BES870 closes that gap quickly. The Bambino Plus is excellent but requires a separate grinder - add that cost before comparing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy a separate grinder with the Breville Barista Express?

No. The integrated grinder is capable of producing espresso-quality grounds across the full grind range. A dedicated grinder will produce marginally better results, but the integrated unit is not a limiting factor for home espresso.

How long does it take to heat up?

Approximately 30 to 35 seconds from cold to ready. This is competitive with machines at twice the price.

What beans should I use?

Medium roast, freshly roasted within four weeks of roast date. Single origin or blends both work. Avoid pre-ground. The machine is designed around whole beans ground fresh.

Is it hard to use?

The espresso extraction is straightforward within a week. Milk steaming takes two to three weeks of daily practice to produce consistent microfoam. It rewards attention.

Is it available outside Australia?

Yes. Sold as the Sage Barista Express in the UK and Europe. Breville brand in the USA, Canada, and Asia Pacific. Same machine globally.

Silver Fox Field Note

The first time you pull a shot that is genuinely better than the cafe down the road, you will stop going to the cafe down the road. That is what this machine costs.
